The clinical trial
“My first stay at J&J CPU is over; today I’m going back home.”
Read here the story of Tom, 28 years old and a volunteer for clinical studies.
The biggest adventure, of course, is the medical tests. But ultimately, there’s no reason to stress, as the tests are conducted in a very well-controlled environment. There is always medically trained staff present, and the medical team walks around the facility to answer your questions. That gives me a nice and reassuring feeling.
The clinical tests
First, I have to provide a blood sample and submit a urine sample, as a kind of baseline measurement even before I receive the medication. Then I will receive the Alzheimer’s medication or the placebo; of course, I don’t know which one. After that, you are essentially free to go; you can go to the relaxation area or read a book in your bed. I choose the latter since I’m not sure how I will feel. But I don’t notice anything. After a few hours, another blood sample is taken, and the doctor asks a few questions. The first day goes by quickly.
The following days are more intense. I have to complete various tasks to test my reaction time and concentration. This is quite fun because it feels like a game that I definitely want to win! I also have a conversation with a psychologist who asks a range of questions. Then a nurse performs a few standard measurements, such as an ECG and blood pressure check. Throughout my stay at J&J CPU, all possible side effects are closely monitored.
Staying overnight
For this study, I stay multiple days at the accommodation of J&J CPU. I share my room with three fellow participants. The idea of sharing my room takes some getting used to at first, but it ultimately works out very well. Everyone is there for the same purpose, so we treat each other with respect and adhere to the “shared bedtime.” Of course, there are curtains hanging between the beds, so we also have our privacy.
Every morning, breakfast is ready. I could get used to that! And you can choose vegetarian meals if you wish.
A diverse group
During the study, you quickly make connections with one another. I always enjoy meeting new people. It’s also a very diverse group.
Amir is studying for his sports dietitian exams and also works for his own startup that he started with a friend. Truly a multitasker! Christina tells me that she participates in clinical studies to help advance science and to take a break from her own routine. She works as a consultant and takes a week off to participate in this research and unwind. Mathias usually works in the events sector, but since those are always temporary assignments or currently on hold due to the pandemic, he sees this as a good side income.

“During the study, you quickly make contact with one another. I always enjoy meeting new people!”
There’s plenty of time for relaxation. However, intensive exercise is unfortunately not allowed since it can affect the test results. You can participate in group activities like a movement class or a creative workshop, which is a good alternative for my workouts!
Time to go home
My stay is over after four nights, and I’m looking forward to sleeping in my own bed again tonight. What will I miss? The relaxed atmosphere, of course, and also that I didn’t have to cook!
